Influence of Depositional and Diagenetic Processes on Caprock Properties of CO2 Storage Sites in the Northern North Sea, Offshore Norway

Characterization of caprock shale is critical in CO2 storage site evaluation because the acts as a barrier for injected buoyant plume. The properties shales are complex and influenced by various processes; hence, it challenging to evaluate quality. An integrated approach therefore necessary assessing seal integrity. In this study, we investigated Lower Jurassic Drake Formation from proposed Aurora (the Longship/Northern Lights CCS project), located Horda Platform area, offshore Norway. Wireline logs 50 exploration wells, 2D seismic lines, two 3D cubes were used investigate variations properties. was subdivided into upper lower units based on lithological observed. Exhumation thermal gradient influencing also analyzed. Moreover, rock physics diagnostics carried out, property maps generated using average log values characterize shales. addiiton, pre-stack seismic-inverted post-stack attributes assessed compared wireline log-based analysis. sediment source controlled at 61° N significantly depositional environment studied which later diagenetic processes had represent similar geomechanical irrespective significant variations. near injection shows less-ductile less-brittle brittleness values. Based thickness shaliness site, might act an effective top seal. However, effect injection-induced pressure changes integrity needs be evaluated.
